Photography from the Heart
By Tien Frogget
For me, taking beautiful photographs is something that comes from the heart, not the mind. So many photographers spend all their energy researching the perfect equipment and collecting fancy lenses and filters and critiquing pictures. They strive for the technically perfect photo, and if they don't achieve it they criticize their own work and hide it away. Photography is not supposed to be perfect. There are technical tools that we can use to improve our photographs, but they are only that: tools - not rules. Some of the best photographs are technically imperfect, just like people are technically imperfect - and yet that's what makes them so beautiful. Each photo is an impression of a moment in time that will never again be recaptured. And only you, from your unique viewpoint, have the ability to take that picture. Another thing that every photographer experiences is the moment when we miss that perfect shot. That rare species of eagle (so to speak) flies over our head and we weren't ready, or the exposure wasn't right, or we got the shot, but it was blurry, and so on. I've seen a lot of people spend hours, and even occasionally days, agonizing over what they missed. Photography isn't how many shots you get or miss, it's about how many you take - and keep taking. I have missed thousands of great shots - and screwed up thousands more. I take more "bad" photos than good, and though I do feel disappointed sometimes when I really wanted to get something and it didn't work out, I always shrug my shoulders and say, "hey, it wasn't meant to be." Then I get out my camera, and go take some more pictures. When you have the attitude of not worrying about whether you get a shot or not, and just enjoy the process, you invite more opportunities in. Life becomes magical. Before I started photography, I don't think I ever truly saw what was around me. In a sense, I was walking blind through my world, never noticing how pretty the cracks in the sidewalk were, or just how many colors there are in a single flower. To me, that's the gift of photography; not the end result, but the ability to see the beauty of the world around me in a new way, and have the chance to capture it and share it with others. I do it for the joy of it, and if other people can share in that joy then it is wonderful. Still, even if others don't, photography has still been one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Contributor's Note
Just as I was finishing writing this intel, a falcon landed on the fence outside and was eating his breakfast. I grabbed my camera and had the chance to take a whole bunch of wonderful shots, so rather than share something else, it only seems appropriate that I share a couple of them with you.

Wonderful 5***** intel and amazing photos; thank you!
Hello Tien, Lovely to meet you and with such a wonderful Intel. I love birds of all sorts and the Eagles and Falcons are really out there with the big Albatrosses from down here in the Southern Seas. Thank you for this Intel re photography. My hubby does it in a similar way to you and his pics come out stunning. In fact virtually all the pics in my Intel or on my web pages are his workmanship. Very seldom do I do anything extra except perpahs re-size sometimes, or perhaps crop a little out. Bless you muchly Tien, it is really super to how some one else enjoys photography too. Sincerely, Danella PS It was a definite 5 from me lass.
It's a pleasure to follow someone who can look at the life around us with an open heart, Tien. You story is a solid 5***** and thank you for including the falcon images. Keep up the good work. Best wishes for a Happy New Year. Frederick

Thank you Norbert for all your kind words and appreciation :)
While I enjoy taking photographs .. just for fun, like you, I also enjoy the magnificent achievements in photography showing nature at work - from the activities of bats, beavers, bison to those of blowfish. For these shots a person does need special equipment. I like the photos you took of the Falcon. He looked right at you and then he flew away, right? :)

Thanks. Actually, he knew I was there the whole time, but he didn't mind me taking pictures of him. He rested there eating for a good twenty minutes, letting me take pictures. He knew I wasn't there to mess with his lunch. :)
